Review: Snowed in for Christmas by F.A. Ray

4 stars

Available: Nov. 19, 2024

The thing I like about F.A. Ray's stories is that they always write characters at least one MC who do not feel inclined hide their sexual orientation, it's simply not a struggle in their universe and I love that about them.

This was such a cute story just in time for the holidays, I can definitely see it being made into a Hallmark movie, or you know a more queer version of what a Hallmark movie would be called.

It's got all the drama inducing elements, snowed in, step-brothers, close proximity and hating each other.

I love the hidden depth to Jett and the way both characters had their own strength in comforting each other during their own chaotic moments. In terms of competency in life, Ben had it covered in spades, while Jett excelled in the emotional relationship aspect of it. The two were perfect for each other, it felt very balanced.

The main MCS had penetrative sex, but there seemed to be no mention of prepping or condoms, which I can only think that it was omitted for brevity sake.

Also it jumps very quickly from enemies to interest in the other person, when in the previous moment, they were just having an argument about not having food etc. I mean they put up a good fight, and didn't get into the actual feelings until the big event that changed both their minds, but I did not believe in their change of heart, but since this is a holiday story, I went with it.

I enjoyed this holiday short story.

Book Review: Defensive Zone by Jodi Oliver

5 stars

Book Launch: Nov 14, 2024

Buy book here:  https://mybook.to/DefensiveZoneThunder3

I love it, I love it, I love it. Saying it three times to really hit the point home. The different way with how this best friend to lovers trope came together made it stand out from the rest. Also the way Carter really owned up to his obliviousness with Zach’s crush/love really spoke to me at how genuine Carter was.

I had no expectation to love this book as much as I do and ok I’m so glad Zach and Carter pushed for their love to be told because I’d hate to Zach to have to suffer MORE with his unrequited love. It was about time you woke up Carter!!!

Spoilerish alert with Epilogue. The tease at the end with Elliot was uncalled for, but I guess it helps settle my annoyance a little at still NOT getting Elliot’s story next. And I totally didn’t see the next story coming. I can’t wait until 2025!!!

Blurb:

Zach

Since I was six years old, my world has revolved around two things: Carter Lockwood and hockey.

We made a pact in college before we turned pro to always put each other first. To make each other our priority, but being in love with your straight best friend can make that hard, especially when you have to watch them fall in love with someone else.

I don’t want to break my best friend's heart to save my own, but I need to put some space between us to save our friendship.

Only this time, it’s not just the defensive zone I’m protecting, but also my heart.

Carter

From the moment I met Zach Reid, we were inseparable.

Nobody really understands why I always wanted to be with him. Our relationship is what some people call codependent, but he’s been my favorite person for over two decades, and life is always calmer when he’s around.

But something changed between us over the summer, and I started to see him in a different way.

Then the pact we made in college started to fall apart, along with my football career.

I don’t know what happened or how to make it right, but there’s one thing I know for certain.

I’m lost without him.

Defensive Zone is a childhood best friends to lovers sports romance featuring a hockey player and football player. It includes unrequited love, a bi-awakening, mutual pining and all the Thunder found family vibes.

It is book three in the Chicago Thunder series and can be read as a standalone.

Book Review: Stray for You by F.A. Ray

Stray for You by F.A. Ray

::Book Review::

Available Nov. 12, 2024 on Amazon or KU

Series: Rainbow Rescue Cat Cafe, Book 3

This is my fav of the Rainbow Rescue Cat Cafe series. This grump/sunshine, nearly step-brother trope is so doing it for me. If you read the boyfriend cafe, you would have met Cam and Julian from it, but no worries if you haven’t, there is plenty of back story in this book to catch you up, you don’t miss anything really.

I don’t know what it is about this storyline. Is it the second chance, is it the slight forbidden romance, is it the long distance? Is it the grump/sunshine? Together combined, it just all works for me.

I really love how Cameron thinks one thing, but speaks another, perhaps I see a lot of myself in him. The way he’s puts himself out there with Julian is just adorable, he can’t help himself. Julian and his one track mind to make Cameron his makes me swoony. I love a good, he’s only this way to me kind of guy. Julian puts up a front for his salespeople, but with Cam, all his facade is down.

In the sentiment of Goldilocks, the spice was just right, not too much, nor too little. I am all for Julian’s Cameron fetish.

There are cameo from past book characters from the series, like Sebastian and Henry, although Henry doesn’t make an actual appearance, just in mention. I love the set up for River in the next book, thank goodness he started talking to the author and demanded his story be told. I can’t wait as the preview at the end really sparks my interest.

Review: Just Bromantically Invested by Saxon James

Release Date: Oct. 17, 2024

Link to buy:  https://geni.us/JustBroInvestedPL

𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐈𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐃 is a best friends to lovers, M/M standalone romance, and the fourth book in Saxon James' Accidental Love Series.

𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑝𝑎𝑡𝑒…

~ Bi-awakening
~ Naturist MC
~ Chicken costume rescue
~ Found family

My thoughts:

3 stars

I know it's lower than normal, and I've given higher to books i've not vibbed with, but I don't know i really feel meh about this one. I had been looking forward to more Bertha Boys after Molly and Seven, they were so sweet together.  However, this book was missing something for me, I can’t pinpoint what it is though. I still enjoyed it due to Saxon's writing, but in the end, I just wasn’t as attached to Madden and Penn.

I'm beginning to think it's the friends to lovers trope for me, as their romance kept missing each other. Madden would be interested, but then something happened and Penn would retreat back. Or vice versa. It was a big struggle bus, but I think perhaps that’s just how the two are, they just wouldn’t get together due to being platonic friends for so long, and while it’s cool to have romance to be written differently, it just wasn’t one of my favs with this series.

Stand outs from this story, include Lana and Lisa, I’m hoping for an FF story from them, maybe a novella like Elle and her story. And also the cameo of Damien, from the date that Seven interrupted, like Damien the rich nice guy needs to start speaking to Saxon and demand a story, maybe a whole series based in Peaches Acre with cameo from Madden and Penn.

Lastly, I know the scenes with Xander are set up for his own book, however, it just seemed like Xander was spirally out of control with how much the Bertha boys are changing. I don’t know what is going to happen with him and Derek, and I am scared, I don’t know if I’m ready because I have high hopes for Xander and I don’t want to feel disappointed with this book.

If you have been following along the series, I think it would be good to read this story because you’d most likely just need ALLLLL the info, however, it’s not a fav of my from the series and I definitely think I’d skip it in re-reads in the future.

I think those who love best friends to lovers would definitely connect with this romance more.

Review: Sweet Like Whiskey by Emmy Sanders

Sweet Like Whiskey (The Darling Brothers, #1)Sweet Like Whiskey by Emmy Sanders
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the cowboy MM romance I was looking for. Equal parts sweet, equal parts spicy. What I loved most about this book was the Darling family. I hope subsequent books do them justice and we get to know everyone a bit more.

Ashley is so very sassy and I loved how he just decided to hit on his boss, and everyone was on board with that, starting with Jackson's mother.

What’s with all the grunting? The second time it happened, I'm just like, this is what people talk about when they say, this character grunted so much. LOL. Like dude, I get you are a grumpy guy and Ash is into the grunting, but can we just voice some words and NOT grunt. I mean it wasn't enough for me to put down the book, but I could see someone else possibly cite that as a DNF reason.

So glad I read this book, I can’t wait for all the HEA for the other brothers, especially Colton.

Spoiler question for Colton, (view spoiler)

Cover Reveal: The Back Up Plan by Eden Finley

THE BACKUP PLAN

King Sports - Book One

by Eden Finley

Cover & Excerpt Reveal

Release Date: November 7, 2024

Photographer: Wander Aguiar Photography
Model: Thane
Genre: M/M Baseball Romance Standalone
Tropes: Enemies to friends to lovers, close proximity, agent + player, secret situationship

Synopsis

Thad

Failing to make it in pro ball left me absolutely devastated. Baseball has been my life, my dream, but it’s time to move on.

Becoming a sports agent was always my backup plan, and now that I’m interning at the biggest queer-focused firm in the country, I’m doing my best not to let my bitterness toward baseball affect my future.

That’s really difficult when I’m assigned to babysit Kelley Afton, hotshot rookie pitcher for Philly. He has everything I ever wanted, and he doesn’t even appreciate it. I didn’t become an agent so I could soothe the ego of diva athletes.

His constant need for validation from others frustrates me to no end, but that’s probably a good thing. Because if he didn’t have that, I’d find him irresistibly my type.

Attraction could lead to crossing lines which would put my position at King Sports in jeopardy, and I can’t have that.

I don’t have a backup for my backup plan.

Excerpt

Kelley avoids eye contact with me as he says, “I kind of asked Brady to take over as my agent when the time comes.”

Ah. Weirdly, that hurts, even though it makes so much sense. If he was going to pick an intern, it could’ve been me, but again, I’ve treated him like dirt since we’ve been banished to this cabin in the middle of nowhere, so why would he ask me?

“Brady is a good choice,” I relent. “He’s going to take over the company one day. No doubt about it.”

“It’s not that I wouldn’t want you, but—”

“Kell, it’s okay. It makes complete sense. Besides, I’m thinking I shouldn’t represent baseball clients anyway. I’m sure you’re not the only one who will have the stats and rookie career I would kill for. And you’re smart to get in with Brady before his client roster becomes too big and he can’t take on any other clients.”

It’s weird that I’m unhealthily jealous of Kelley when Brady is the one who’s actually doing my job better than me and getting ahead already, but at the same time, I wouldn’t want the kind of pressure that Brady has on his shoulders.

He’s the nephew of the boss. He has famous dads and basically lives in the shadow of his NFL quarterback brother. When I say he’s the next big sports agent, it’s because he has to be.

When I played baseball, I was happy I wasn’t the best of the best. The best had way too much pressure on them. I’d strive for a happy middle, and I think that’s what I want from this job too.

But maybe this is why I never made it in baseball. All the athletes I know have that competitive edge. That need to be the best. I don’t have that. I want to be good, and I want to prove myself, and I loved being on a team that was number one. But that competitiveness? I only had it when it came to winning. Not me. The whole team.

“I went and made things weird again, didn’t I?” Kelley asks. He shifts uncomfortably.

“No. You didn’t. You just made me realize something is all.”

“That you really do hate me?”

“No. And I’m sorry I ever made you feel that way. I’m realizing that to do this job, I’m going to need my clients to know that while I’m not the hotshot that Brady is, I do know how to put in the work and get them the deal that’s right for them. I don’t need to be the best. I only have to be the person they need, and I like that.”

Kelley finishes off his hot cocoa. “That is a really healthy way to look at your position because I have no doubt that the intern bullpen is full of eager guys willing to stomp all over the others to get ahead.”

“I might have been eager to do that with baseball, but not this.”

Kelley blinks at me, as if he’s trying to figure out if I’m being serious or not.

“Don’t worry. I never kneecapped a bitch with a baseball bat. Even if I did, I think I’d have to kneecap about an entire team’s worth if I even wanted to qualify for Triple-A baseball.”

“Good to know. Even if I’m now a little scared of you.”

I finish off my drink, too, and then stand and offer to take his mug back into the kitchen. “Just the way I like it.”

I move to the sink and start rinsing the cups when Kelley follows me into the kitchen.

“You are intimidating, you know.” He leans against the entryway, arms folded. “That might be something you could work on.”

“I’m intimidating?” I put on an angelic smile.

“Argh. No. When you smile, you’re plain scary. But the scowl is what I found intimidating the most.”

I slump. “Okay, so I can’t smile. Or scowl. And that leaves me with …”

“Maybe you could be an over-the-phone agent.”

I’m trying really hard not to laugh. “Is Kelley Afton calling me … ugly?”

“No. Shit. The opposite. You’re too hot to even be able to concentrate, and—” His eyes almost bulge out of his head. “Holy hell, that’s inappropriate. I didn’t mean—well, I did mean. You’re hot as fuck, but I meant that … oh my God, I’m gonna go to bed and pray an avalanche hits me.” He turns to leave, but I’m hot on his heel. And hot everywhere, it seems.

At least in the eyes of Kelley Afton.

I knew he was checking me out. “Why are you running off so fast?”

“To die of embarrassment.”

“There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Just because you find me so incredibly hot and attractive. Soooo irresistible. But not when I smile. Or scowl.”

He stops and turns his head toward me, almost hesitating before saying, “No. The scowl is very hot. But … intimidating.”

Even though he thinks my smile is scary, it’s hard not to at that.

“Fucking hell,” he mutters. “Your genuine smile is hot too. Can you go back to being an asshole to me so I don’t find you this attractive?”

I move closer to him. “But where’s the fun in that?”

Kelley’s tongue darts out to wet his lips, and the urge to lean in and cover his mouth with mine is almost unbearable.

Telling him I’m going to be more professional and then trying to kiss him really could get me fired. But … it’s not like he’s my actual client. I’m not his agent; I never will be his agent. So, is it really that wrong?

Apparently, it is.

Kelley steps back. “I should … go to bed.”

“We both should,” I agree.

There go those deep brown eyes again, trying to pop out of his head.

I smother my amusement. “Separately. Of course.”

Kelley swallows so hard I see his Adam’s apple bounce. “Yes. Separately. That is also what I thought you meant.”

“Good night, Kelley.”

“Good night,” he whispers.

Before he can disappear inside his room, I stop him for one last thing. “Thank you again, by the way. Not only for forgiving me for being a dick but for actually giving me some good advice.”

“Anytime.”

I might take him up on that.

 Collide by Crea Reitan

Release Date: Sept 12, 2024

Purchase here:  https://geni.us/crduevents

Series: Rainbow Dorset University Book 1

TW: Spicy MM enemies to lovers story with cheating, but not between the MCs.

A little about the book:

Lemon has always kept people at a distance as he was too loud, too proud and too himself. This year, as a football coach of a team that produces numerous NFL stars, he finds his budget cut significantly to accommodate  hockey, something the school's dean has decided to put emphasis on this year. Lemon now hates hockey and the NHL player that they hired on as coach after he retired. All this hating the enemy was going well except Hansley is hot hot hot, and somehow in a fit of anger, Lemon kissed Hansley, who is straight, married and has a beautiful wife.

I devoured this book when the ARC arrived in my inbox. I rushed it to the front of my reading queue because nothing else mattered. I don't know why since I've been in a reading slump, but Crea's works always calls to me to immediately read. Her pairings are not my usual cup of tea. They are always a little spicy and a little bit confusing, however her characters are very real, and not wrapped up in a nice ribbon, but maybe that's why I find them irresistible.

I like that the Rainbow Dorset University series is set more in the 30s and 40s age Personally I've been having a hard time connecting with MM romance in the early 20, so having this series set more in the 30s and 40s feels comfortable for me.

I really enjoyed this book and the college that Crea has created, I loved this campus where all is included and adding Hansley into the mix brought the harmony together.

Book Review: Disaster Stray by F.A. Ray

4-stars

Release date: Sept 10, 2024

Rainbow Rescue Cat Cafe, book 2

Book available on KU

Second book from the Rainbow Cat Cafe, this time it features Sebastian, that aloof sparkling guy with the long hair, the other employee.

Both Sebastian and Luke, the other MC, have their own baggage, one is seemingly just about hooking up and closing himself off to avoid the hurt, while the other is deep, deep, in the closet due to past trauma.

Had I read the blurb closer, I would have realized that what kept Luke in the closet was how his family reacted when his brother came out, except I didn't do that, so I was kept in the dark about that pretty much the entire time, my bad. Only when Luke finally opened up to Sebastian, like more than 50 percent into the book, I was like oh! Ok, so that's why he's so firmly in the closet.

Although there are spicy scenes in the book, this book is very much about the development of Luke and his coming to terms with his gayness. I'm sensing a theme with this Rainbow cat cafe series, both have been one party coming to terms with their sexuality and coming out. I wonder if the third is like that too. Oh! And the partner must adopt a cat. LOL.

Recommend for those loving a good coming out story and friendship building.
