The Gargoyle and the Romance Writer by Chloe Archer. It’s book 2 in her Monsters Hollow series and a first read by this author for me. I must say I didn’t care much for gargoyles or monsters in general before this, but this book has me looking at monsters for potential book boyfriends. The quick blurb is that Ryder is a romance writer who ran away to Mystic Hollows to hide from a stalker, and The Gargoyle, Vash DarkWing is the security protection. It’s a gargoyle-bodyguard turn friends with benefits turn HEA. 

Each chapter of this book begins with either forum chats, or an excerpt from a book by the Romance Writer. While in the beginning it was fun to read about it and take a step back from the story, towards the end when things got intense, I started skipping it to move the story along. I went back to read them later on to make sure I didn’t miss anything though. 

There are mentions of other monsters in the book that is making me want to read their story, like Max and the Orc, Yuki and his demon, or even in the future, Hal and the hairdresser. I’m definitely gonna read the rest of the series and catch up with Max’s story.

The cover art drew me in and made me want to read this gargoyle romance even though I’m not into monster romance and had to look up a few monsters to see what they look like since I’m not familiar with them. 

Other things I like about this book is the dialogue between Ryder and DarkWing. Ryder’s filterless brain gets him into trouble with hookups and potential partners, but DarkWing finds his thoughts refreshing and he likes that Ryder is no frills and says exactly what he thinks and what he means. I love it when MCs finally find the one who can accept all their quirks and habits that others have used as reasons not to be with the MCs.

Highly recommend.

I skipped a few stories because they didn’t spark my interest, but the ones I did read I really enjoyed. 

Hired by the Enemy by Jax Cadler was good. It’s a childhood enemies to present lovers, second chance romance, misunderstanding, and fake dating. The two MCs now older grew to see other sides of one another and really saw a softer and vulnerable side of the other. I love how they blew the other couples out of the water with the resort’s couples’ quiz “because it turns out that spending years plotting the downfall of someone means you acquire a lot of knowledge about them.”

“And even though it’s fake, and it’s my enemy’s hand, there’s still something nice about having someone claim me like this.”

I mean love and hate is a thin line anyway.

Text Me Like You Love Me by Rhys Everly is also another one I enjoyed. This one is also fake dating, but the plot twist is that their dynamic is a billionaire/escort romance 20 year age-gap and power exchange.

Usual power exchange one would stereotype is that the older is the Master, and younger is the sub, but in this story, Keaton likes to be dominated and Milo loves being a Dom. Their pet names during the act is a bit derogatory, but that’s what they like and I am not judging someone else’s kink.

“The world warns you about getting addicted to drugs and booze. No one ever warns you about getting addicted to a person. It’s unfair.”

Friend for Hire by Saxon James is also a cute one. We finally get Elle’s HEA. Elle is the spunky feminist sister from the MC in the husband hoax. I have been waiting to read this story ever since it was announced, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s the same kind of fun writing Saxon is known for, and as always we get a glimpse into other characters fighting for their stories to be told. I can’t wait!!

“I force my limbs to work again and pull the shirt over my head, then look down at the sight of my very ample cleavage trying to greet the world.” LOL

Darts and Dashers by V.L. Locey is another cute one. It’s another fake date, but hockey romance. Although out and proud hockey legend Paul needs a date for an upcoming award ceremony. His PA sets him with Elite and helps pick out the man of his dreams, in a sort of blind date way. It’s super cute with the other MC, Roth, a sewer and hoping to get his clothing collection for owner and pet off the ground. Roth is typically a handful, but a great fake date. 

Read this for micro-trope of feminine men in over the top outfits and and makeup and dogs in matching outfits. 

“You’re the luckiest puck pusher in all of Florida to have such a lovely creature on your arm.”

All in all, I would definitely recommend reading the anthology as it’s a great way to get a sample of different authors without having to commit to a whole novel, plus it’s nice to see how the different authors come up with different ways to write the same theme.

I love Eden X Saxon Collabs. The books they write are so fun, light and easy to read. I have been waiting for this since the last Puckboy ended, and I couldn’t wait to get started on Bromantics when it dropped. I love all the puckboys, but this pairing, idiots to lovers is really fun. The whole entire book is lighthearted and fun to read, their antics are just very outrageous, like Miles getting it in his head to kidnap Bilson’s dog by seducing the ex-wife, and starting weird traditions to cover up said stolen dog, then having to continue that tradition because you won a game. Believe me, their antics are hilarious and so laugh out loud funny.

Read this book if you love bi-awakening, idiots to lovers, and weird hockey goalie ways.

I will leave you with this swoony quote from the book that Miles said to Bilson. 

“You might be the last thing I need, but you’re the first thing I want when I wake up in the morning.

I love their chemistry. Alexander and Elias was super hot together. Trying to keep it casual never works. Especially the one that says first, “I don’t do relationships” that the one that falls first and ends up doing all the relationshipy things like cooking, and that possessiveness starting from way way beginning. Yep I don't know why they thought they could keep it casual?!

Read this for age gap, boss/employee, mens lacey underwear and spice, lots of lots of spice.

Waiting for Oolong Time by F.A Ray is the first book of the series that I’ve read by the author. Although it works as a standalone like how I read it, looking back, I would have liked a bit more detail backstory to how the boyfriend Cafe worked. I guess it didn’t matter as much in this story really since Jack didn’t work as the face of the cafe, but only in the bakery parts and this book took place at another bakery. 

What drew me in was the title of the book, I love play on words and love Oolong Tea, but what made me stay was their second chance romance, or rather second chance friendship turn romance. 

Jack and Soren grew apart due to losing someone they loved and nine years later that grief also brought them together. At their bakery where Soren is head baker and Jack is intern, they steal moments to be with one another and one day they couldn’t hide their secret relationship anymore and both their livelihood is on the line, so how will they get out of this situation?

Read this book if you like, childhood friend turn lovers, brother’s best friend, hurt/comfort, spicy stolen moments, and of course bakery romance.

“He kisses me like a storm set loose. His passion batters me around, leaves me swaying on my feet, but with his large frame boxing me in, I don’t have to worry about falling. I just have to hang on and let this happen.” 

Now that I’m done with this book, I’m looking to read up more on the boyfriend cafe starting with book 1, A Matcha Made in Hell.
